Key Impact

A consolidated live view connected critical port equipment and made operating, stopped, and idling states visible at a glance

Live Status of Equipment / Infrastructure

Context & Background

A large commercial port operates through an interconnected chain of heavy equipment and bulk-handling infrastructure - including harbor cranes, conveyor belts, stacker-reclaimers, silo discharge units, and wagon-loading systems. Managers need an integrated understanding of the condition of the entire operating chain, rather than disconnected machine metrics in isolation.

Key Challenges

1Determining whether equipment was actively operating, stopped, or idling required fragmented phone calls and manual coordination across dispersed field locations.
2When an upstream conveyor or downstream stacker halted, operators at other points in the chain were often unaware, creating avoidable bottlenecks and energy waste.
3Management lacked a single real-time picture of whether multi-crore capital assets were being utilised productively at any given moment.

Work Executed

Defined the key operational states (running, stopped, idling, fault) required for holistic management oversight
Integrated disparate equipment data streams through the enterprise plant information (PI) system
Connected cranes, conveyor networks, stacker-reclaimers, and wagon loaders into a unified data architecture
Designed a single-glance live operational dashboard visualizing equipment status across all berths and yards
Established automated alerts and workflow triggers to support rapid operational intervention upon interruption

Value Delivered

Consolidated visibility enabled real-time operational control, earlier bottleneck detection, and synchronized equipment handoffs. Asset utilisation increased, turnaround times improved, and avoidable energy and utility idling costs were significantly curtailed.
